Although Barry and I were at the University of Essex over the whole of the length of his career there, it was not until after he retired that I really came to know him. He joined the Lexden Choral Society at that time, of which I was already a member. He was a much appreciated member of the bass section. His friendliness was valued by everyone, and he became an essential help to the Society’s director behind the scenes, making sure that everything ran smoothly and all necessary arrangements were in place. He was unassuming and not assertive and probably his role was little noticed, but there is no doubt that his support for Sarah, the Director, played a large part in the success of the Society.
In 2014 Sarah became Barrie’s second wife and ceased directing the society, but it continues to give pleasure under a new director, even in these difficult times.
