Over the past weekend all the members of Clondalkin RFC were saddened to learn of the demise of one of the great characters within the Club. Chris passed away in Tallaght Hospital after a short illness. Chris McGlinn was Club President on three occasions 1984/85, 2006/7 and more recently in 2017/18. He also filled other roles within the club with distinction over the past 40 plus years, including a number of terms as Hon Secretary. He was a Director of the holding company overseeing the correct functioning of the club for many years. Even though he was past his 80th year he was active on Committee up to last season. His energy levels put a lot of younger members to shame.
He lived for many years in Castle Park in Clondalkin. He moved from there later to reside in Terenure.
Chris was a member of the Institute of Engineers. His career saw him working in the Service to Industry division in ANCO.
The Rugby Club was founded in 1973. Chris first became associated with Clondalkin Rugby Club in the mid 1970’s and soon became a familiar figure supporting the teams on the field and adding to the camaraderie off the pitch. His musical talents both after matches and on tours abroad are legendary. His accordion and piano playing earned him a place in the annals of the club.
As Chris himself would testify his knowledge of rugby was very basic but he loved the fun aspects of all that went with being a member of the club. He also initiated Christmas Club Pantomime’s & not only wrote the script but produced, directed and acted in most of them.
He with his wife Tuula were regular attendees at most Rugby International in Lansdowne Road over the years and would retire after the game to the Beggars Bush for after match discussions which could go long into the evenings.
Chris will be sadly missed by his wife Tuula and sons Kris & Jonathon plus extended family and all our thoughts and prayers go out to them on this sad occasion. Due to the COVID pandemic the club are unable to arrange the traditional Presidential Guard of Honour for deceased Past Presidents but he will be remembered appropriately when circumstances permit.
