What a colossal loss that Hugh who had been 'still batting at 92 not out, and hoping to hit a century!' was out at 95 last Wednesday. I am one of the fortunate persons to meet this great mentor in several seminars in Dhaka in early 1980s and was totally absorbed by his articulate presentations on soils, cropping patterns and farmer's practices. I felt so blessed that he had responded to my invitation and paid his last visit to Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in mid February 2009 while I was the Vice-Chancellor. I relish with immense gratitude his insights and advice about BAU curricula, inspiring the teachers and researchers the entire evening and the following morning which was ended by his planting of a sapling in our university botanical garden that has been living as a token of Hugh's love and affection to this premier institution of agricultural education. My last memory about Hugh is a great honour for me that he nominated me to receive his lifetime achievement award 2018 from the University Press Limited on his behalf as he could not join the ceremony personally. Bangladesh agricultural education and research community will remember him for his seminal work, advice and guidance. He will live through his immortal quest for new knowledge and development.
