Hugh was a wonderful man and I will miss him very much. I was fortunate to get know him in recent years through Professor Bill Adams at Downing. Hugh’s commitment to Geography and its teaching ran deep and his support to the Bengal Maps Study, to the Brammer Society and to the Brammer Fellowship in Geography will ensure that his influence continues. His unflagging energy and intellectual engagement in his subject was extraordinary and he was an example on how to live well to the very end.
During visits to Cambridge, Hugh would pop into College and in recent times we enjoyed lunch with our Fellows in Geography and dinner with Brammer Society students in his honour on the occasion of his 94th birthday. He was delighted to receive an 'access all areas' Downing card as it provided a short-cut through the back gate to the Geography Department after decades of walking around the long way!
We were in touch in early December when he forwarded his latest research paper with the promise of another to come soon and we arranged to speak before Christmas. Alas, it was not to be. Hugh will be fondly remembered and very much missed by all who knew him. I send my sincerest condolences to his family and friends at this time.
