Hugh, I am deeply sad to hear that you passed away, and that too by covid. You have constantly impressed me since we first got acquainted in 2014. Despite being in your 90s, you were prolific in your writing and publications. Even this summer, during pandemic lockdown, you took the time to read my historical chapter on embankments, giving excellent feedback and suggestions. I was relieved to hear you were working from home, and so shocked you fell ill to this horrible virus. I so had wished to send you a physical copy of my book 'Misreading Climate Change' this autumn. You and Pat helped me so much with the maps at the British Library for this historical research. For all your time, suggestion and expertise, I will always be grateful and its a shame I could not share this final version with you. We did not always share the same views, but on the problems of siltation we did agree. I will miss our conversations Hugh. I hope you are at peace, wherever you are and know that your writing and work has had a real and, I believe, long-lasting impact. Sincerely/Camelia
