A lot of people have known him as a big scientist, especially a sulfur chemist. Once he was lecturing at the University of Urbana-Champaign, IL, and he was introduced in a nice manner ""S" in the periodic System Stands for Steudel". It felt like that for many. He was a known text-book author, an incredible teacher. But first of all, he was an amazing person. He was generous, he was humorous, he was very critical (!) and he was such a loving person.

Mit Bestürzung haben wir vom plötzlichen Tod unseres ehemaligen Vorgesetzten und Doktorvaters Ralf Steudel erfahren. Die Zeit in den 80ziger Jahren, als wir zusammen in seinem Arbeitskreis am Institut für Anorganischen Chemie der Technischen Universität Berlin tätig waren, ist uns stets in guter Erinnerung geblieben. Das gemeinsame Arbeiten und Forschen auf seinem Gebiet der Schwefelchemie hat uns geprägt. Für unsere Nöte und Sorgen hatte er immer ein offenes Ohr. Wichtig waren ihm und uns aber auch die vielen schönen Feiern zu Geburtstagen, Weihnachten und Doktorfeiern sowie gemeinsame Ausflüge des Arbeitskreises. Ralf Steudel wird uns stets in guter Erinnerung bleiben. Unser tiefes Mitgefühl gilt seiner Frau Yana sowie allen Angehörigen. Like so many other chemists, I learned to know Ralf through his publications. In the latter half of 1970s, I had started my graduate studies and worked with heterocyclic selenium sulfides. The crystal structures were disordered and X-ray crystallography did not provide any information, whether there were binary compounds in these crystalline phases or only solid solutions of cyclooctasulfur and -selenium. At about the same time Ralf had started to publish Raman spectroscopic and normal coordinate studies of homocyclic sulfur rings. My thesis supervisor in Helsinki University of Technology, Prof. Lauri Niinistö, suggested that we contact Ralf and carry out the Raman spectroscopy on my binary systems together with him. Ralf invited me to come to Berlin. During the years 1979-1985 I visited Berlin several times. It culminated in my extended stay there of almost two years in 1984-1985. In addition to learning Raman spectroscopy during that time, Ralf taught me, how research should be done. He stressed the importance of fundamental research and the need for critical evaluation of one’s own conclusions. He belonged to the generation, who could master widely the whole field of inorganic chemistry and who could utilize this knowledge in his own research. He will always remain as a best example of how research should be conducted. His impact goes beyond the extensive research work he has published himself, because he has educated a large number of inorganic chemists, who keep carrying the torch.

Ralf was an icon in my area of chemistry and a friend as well. He epitomized a "German professor" since he was formal, meticulous, and always proper. He was also warm and attentive. The contrast between Ralf and his beloved Yana was great and the pair was a very special delight. He was charmed by her and she was charmed by him. Yana added color and novelty to his life through companionship, collaborations, and most amazingly, culinary creativity. He was extremely proud of Yana. Ralf lived a wonderful life in his beloved Berlin. He once described to me how his family escaped east Berlin before the wall. Each member of the family took a different strassenbahn to the west, where they rejoined and started their lives anew. Many of us remember the inorganic rings meeting that he hosted in Berlin. He made a special presentatiion during this meeting about our safety and the fall of the Soviet Union. The combination of great science, momentous history, and deep friendships is a memory that I cherish. Of course Ralf achieved international recognition through his research as well ashis textbooks. I am sure that he has a "to-do list" on his desk even now. Many do not know that he was very active in the past two years with an industrial project that built upon his brilliant contributions. Rest in peace Ralf.

We shared a truly memorable dinner party with Yana and Ralf . Yana cooked a multi course fabulous meal, we had to guess the ingredients and spices as best we could. Coming from Liverpool where our main meals are a full English breakfast and a pan of scouse, this proved to be quite difficult, lots of fun and laughs late into the night. I’ve never looked at a zebra again without thinking of that wonderful night together! Thanks for a cherished memory

I first met Ralf when he came to Calgary for a Sulfur symposium more than 45 years ago and we still have the game of Sogo that he brought for our children at that time . A couple of years later on a visit to Berlin he kindly accompanied me on a trip to East Berlin, although we had to enter through the different gates for visitors and residents. We met many times over the years at the triennial IRIS conferences on Inorganic Ring Systems . Ralf was a leader in the development of the highly successful IRIS conferences including organizing the memorable IRIS 6 meeting in Berlin in 1991. Three years later he was back in Calgary for IRIS 7 meeting in Banff. I recall Ralf taking pictures of the piles of his beloved Sulfur during a post-conference trip to a sour gas plant just outside Calgary. In recent years I was able to appreciate Ralf's encyclopedic knowledge of Sulfur chemistry even more through a collaboration on a review article published in 2019. Through numerous email exchanges in recent years I came to know Ralf as a kind, generous and wise man as well as a giant in Sulfur chemistry. He will be missed greatly by his scientific colleagues Our most recent meeting with Ralf and Yana was at the 2015 IRIS meeting in Regensburg where we enjoyed their company at a dinner in the old town and on a boat trip on the Danube. Our thoughts are now with Yana and we hope that time will heal the emptiness felt by this sudden loss. TRIS & SUE CHIVERS

I first met Ralf in 1991 - I was at a conference in Berlin with my baby son. He created a name tag for my son so he appeared to be a 'proper' member of the conference - different times :) He was always a gentleman - charming, erudite, and there was nothing worth knowing about sulfur - amongst many other things - he didn't know. I met him many times over the years, and he always remained the same kind man I had first met. I last met him in 2017 in Berlin, where amongst other things he hosted a fantastic meal in the Reichstag, aided by his wife Yana, who he gave credit to for managing to persuade them to let us all to eat there at short notice.He adored Yana, who will miss him greatly, as we all do.

I first knew Ralf through his many excellent contributions to sulfur chemistry. Not only was the work elegant it was always reported beautifully. I was lucky enough to have met him many times over the past 30 years including in summer 2017 in Berlin. He was very proud (and knowledgable) about Berlin and strode around with great energy and infectious enthusiasm telling us numerous anecdotes, stories of life and history in this great city. In quieter moments when discussing chemistry his insight and knowledge (especially about sulfur) was wonderful and I often emailed him for science advice which he dispensed with astonishing patience. I shall miss him as a scientist and as a charming friend with a wonderful sense of humour Derek Woollins St Andrews
