Please share your memories and sign your name: Many of us first knew Terry as an excellent student when he joined Bowers CIS as a CALS undergraduate. Upon receiving his BS in Information Science in 2017, Terry joined the IS department staff where he dedicated his talents to course management, graduate program support, and IS minor advising. In June of this year he was promoted to assistant director of undergraduate advising, focusing on IS. Terry was widely considered a “go-to” resource for his faculty and staff colleagues, and was cherished for his professionalism, can-do attitude toward problem solving, and dry wit. He will be deeply missed. Please share messages, memories or photos below which will be given to the Horgan family.

Terry was a warm, jovial friend with a sharp sense of humor that I appreciated. He and I would talk often about baseball, the NY Mets, books, and movies. When Terry discovered that I had never seen a single Star Wars movie, nor had I seen the last Lord of the Rings epic, Terry showed up to my office with a thumbdrive. On that drive were Star Wars and Lord of the Rings movies. One of these days, Terry, I'll get around to viewing them all. I'm just sorry that we won't have the chance to discuss them in detail. I knew Terry as his teacher at the Chemung Valley Montessori School, His bright smile and indomitable spirit were obvious even as a preteen. I'm not surprised at what he was able to accomplish in his life, nor of the sacrifices he made to help future generations struggling with his rare disease. Terry lived his life with courage and joy, and I am proud to know him and his remarkable, supportive, and loving family. Deep condolences and happy memories to Terry, Linda, and Rich. Sheila Reed

Terry took course CS2110. He did an excellent job. I admired him greatly and did what I could to help him. I also really admire his father, who has taken care of Terry for so long. We will miss Terry. David Gries Professor Emeritus

Terry was am inspiration and a hero for our family. He boldly led the way to push the boundaries of science on behalf of thousands of DMD families like ours around the world. In 40 years of working in higher education I never met anyone more helpful than Terry! In a department where everyone is a specialist about computers and the internet especially, and so I would be very embarrassed usually to ask a stupid question but Terry always made me feel comfortable to ask. Terry was one of the wittiest , kindest and thoughtful people I knew. I always lit up when I joined our online gaming chat DIscord and saw Terry was online. He always genuinely cared what was going on with me and we traded life experiences back and forth. Whenever I was going through anything Terry was always there to encourage me to better myself in my personal and professional life. The more I learn about Terry and the more stories I hear from his parents, the more I'm convinced that he is the cooler Horgan brother! Terry was born into the best family he could have ever hoped for - the most supportive parents and loving brother. Terry goes down in my books as a brave hero whose sacrifice will never be forgotten. Terry had a really great sense of sarcastic humor that made him fit quite well with Aussies! One of my first memories is that Terry made Angela and I this awesome light saber that had great craftsmanship that I will treasure forever. Terry was an extremely kind, thoughtful, and patient person who cared for students like me. Terry advocated for and guided me through the process of teaching a class in the pandemic and, with others in the dept, made sure I was fairly paid. Throughout my PhD he was always there with a cheerful response to any question or request, no matter how small. He will be sorely missed and my thoughts are with his family.

An incredibly kind, courageous, and eager person, Terry will be sorely missed in Information Science, CIS, and Cornell as a whole. I always thought of him as an amazing role model to the many students that he advised. Besides being extremely efficient and pragmatic at his job, he was also funny and social. I miss getting to work with him. My thoughts are with his family.

[Associate Dean for Education, Bowers CIS. Currently on sabbatical (Europe).] My sincere condolences to the entire Horgan family. Terry was not only a critical and beloved member of the Information Science department, he was, more broadly, a critical and beloved member of the Bowers CIS advising team. We were looking forward to, and counting on, having Terry --- with his experience, work ethic, dedication and humor --- with us for the foreseeable future. He is very much missed.

I'm the current chair of the Department of Information Science at Cornell. My condolences to the Horgan family. Our department has so greatly benefited by having Terry be a part of it, first as a student, and then as a staff member. He was so amazingly good at what he did. I would send him email when I was working at night, asking for something that I assumed he would work on the following day. But then I'd get an answer 20 minutes later... So many faculty and staff have told me how helpful and supportive he was. We miss him very much, and we know you miss him even more.

Terry was such a kind, thoughtful person and just immensely good at what he did. I have never met a person who was so generous with his time. I asked Terry for help with all kinds of big and small tasks over the last several years, and he was beyond helpful, without exception. Terry truly set the standard and I'll miss getting to work with him. My heart is with his family.

What struck me about Terry is how much he was one of us, and how much he liked the job. I don't think you could do what he did, or be as involved as he was, without finding real satisfaction in the work. In that way, he fit in perfectly. I miss him and I mourn his loss.

Terry was an important part of my PhD experience. He was always helpful and friendly, and he always responded patiently and quickly to even my most complicated or naive questions, helping me through some big and stressful moments like planning my defense. I knew I could depend on his help, and he was a key part of our information science community. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing and wish his family every comfort.

Terry was such an incredible part of Information Science. I knew him first as a student in my class. He sent me an email introducing himself and telling me about the few accommodations he may need to participate effectively in the class. His kind reminder helped me rethink the ways that I can make learning more accessible to all students. Then, in supporting the IS MPS program in our department, he was simply incredible. He had wizard-like capabilities to pull out information, make things happen, and know about the nitty-gritty details of various systems that are far from easy to work with. His ability to get back with answers so quickly was unmatched. No task seemed too difficult to him. He was also so kind and funny, and I miss him every day. I cherish the memories of him. He was a beautiful soul.

I only got to know Terry through working with him, but I was always floored by his kindness and professionalism. One thing that always amazed me was his ability to respond to an email seemingly before you even sent it to him! He was so skilled and I swear he knew more about how things worked than anyone else in the department. It got to the point where whenever he emailed me I always tried to "out-Terry" him by replying as quickly as I could manage, but I could never beat him at it. I feel very lucky to have known Terry and will miss him.

As a PhD student in the InfoSci department, I have found Terry's help invaluable when trying to figure out how the hell to be a PhD student. He was always on top of things and always a pleasure to interact with online or offline. I surely wish there was more offline, and thank his family for raising such a cool human being.

Chris and I traveled to Boston to see a band in September and had the chance to enjoy a delicious beer at Samuel Adams brewery with Terry, and his dad. I never thought it was going to be the last time I was going to see Terry in person. We had a wonderful time, amazing talk, laughs, and even snapped a picture to share with Barb and make her jealous :). Terry was so special, thoughtful, brave, and I feel honored and blessed to have been his friend, and coworker. He will never be forgotten!

I only worked with Terry briefly but I immediately liked him. He was one of the most helpful people I've ever worked with and responded to every question in a matter of minutes and nothing was too complicated for him. I got to know him a little better when I helped him with his application to the advisor position and appreciated his dry sense of humor. I am really going to miss seeing him around the office. Terry was amazing to work with and a wonderful person. I'll forever cherish all the memories I have of him. Terry was a very special member of the Information Science staff. He is a real trooper, regardless of what the group of us was doing . This was from our staff retreat in 2021, when we needed to be outside because of COVID.
