Forough cared deeply about the well-being of people around her. She knew how to make everyone feel included, cherished, loved and important. As a scientist, her research focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in developing immunity to a deadly infectious disease. She was so down to earth that no one would even suspect that she was an internationally recognized scientist with many awards and accomplishments. Forough’s passion for partnership building in translational life sciences and helping other researchers succeed, brought her to Mitacs where she helped many researchers realize the true potential of their discoveries. She had the most contagious and genuine laugh. She would make you laugh even if she was really in pain. Sadly, we only had her in our world for a short period but she made our lives happier, kinder and more joyful. We will all remember Forough’s passion for Mitacs, enthusiasm for innovation, and her positive outlook on life. We invite you to share your memories of Forough here.

I will always remember a particularly lengthy cab ride that I shared with Forough in 2017 when we got stuck in traffic together during rush hour. We compared notes about growing up abroad—she had grown up in New Zealand, and me, in Australia. She explained her PhD thesis to me—she had helped research a treatment for the deadly disease, visceral leishmaniasis (Black Fever.) I remember how good she was at describing her research in a simple way that anyone could understand. She talked about how proteins fold. And made it interesting! Not surprisingly, she had won a three-minute thesis competition while studying. She loved Oprah. People. Cooking. Science. And working hard. She was charming. I’m deeply saddened and shocked to learn that she’s gone now. You were one of the good ones, Forough. The world is dimmer without your vibrant spirit and memorable laughter.
