On retiring from the Biochemistry Department at the turn of the millennium, while having the prospect of joining an experimental EU-funded research programme on kidney cancer, I was able to re-locate to the forbear of CEP through the mediation of John Mumford. This involved using a basement lab in the Royal School of Mines where the door key conveniently matched the front door of my home! Subsequent facilities in the RSM for my experimental science continued for about 15 years until CEP moved to Weeks. That legacy had only been possible though John's exceptional generosity, for which I will always be grateful.
