I knew John both as a teacher and as a colleague and in both roles he was always unfailing calm and gentle in providing his support, guidance and knowledge - he was never one of those to shout his presence or to put himself above others and yet his voice was always heard and listened too. A quiet voice of wisdom that I hope I will continue to hear in my head when things are challenging.
