I have been lucky to know John for two decades and to work with him closely on several projects and papers ranging from fisheries to genre literature. His ideas undoubtedly will continue to shape my views on everything related to sustainability and risk. It is painful to lose a mentor. I am grateful to have so many memories of John, from him accepting an invitation to join a group dance in Burkina Faso to him speaking often on our research group’s behalf – never putting a foot wrong, the amazing spontaneity with which clarity flowed from his words.
He was an inspiration not just to me but my daughter, who is now embarking on a career in science and policy. John’s explaining how the bee colony works on our visit to Silwood left a lasting impression on her as a child and foregrounded her engagement with science. John will always be in our minds and our thoughts are with Megan and the rest of his family.
