It was a terrible shock to hear this news. John was a really special person. I remember him vividly since the very old days, when he was deputy HoD to John Beddington. Organised and sensible, an excellent colleague to all who worked with him. I did a very small job for John and Jon Knight back in the day, mapping mosquito populations in Senegal in my PhD or early PDRA days at Imperial. I enjoyed his professional and at the same kind approach to getting things done properly. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
