Julian was an outstanding academic and inspirational figure in chemical engineering process modelling and control. He was instrumental in bringing various types of process modelling and control into the practice of chemical engineers, particularly at Newcastle. He was always a bundle of energy and ideas, never more so than when he was creating and running CPACT, which remains a model of academia-industry collaboration.
This is a great loss to Newcastle University, and the chemical engineering community, and he will be greatly missed.
