I have known and worked with Julian for a long time. He appointed me into my first RA position and later to a lectureship position at Newcastle University and I will always be grateful to him. His energy and enthusiasm were inspiring and he was always happy to share his invaluable expertise and ideas. His passing is a great loss to the process modelling and control community not just in the UK, but also internationally. He will be sorely missed.
