Marilyn was an inspiring teacher and colleague when I knew her in the Residential College at the University of Michigan. She and her family spent a year in our house at 1413 Granger Ave. Some of our furniture from that time bears evidence of their presence. When we moved back, the Youngs were installed in a house around the corner from us, where Marilyn hosted generations of students as well as rotating meetings of an early women's consciousness-raising group. After many years of being out of touch, I spoke to her a month ago. She was full of hope-- preparing her new apartment and talking about her travel plans. She asked me to add her to the list of friends I visit in Manhattan and I said I would. I am, sadly, unable to come to her funeral service. My best wishes to Michael and Lauren and to her devoted friends and colleagues.
