I remember, nervous and newly elected, sitting down for a briefing with Ruth on a particularly complex university project - Ruth patiently explained all the intricacies to me, and offered me her 100% support with making representations to the most senior leaders in the university. Such encouragement was typical of Ruth's nature - and I believe she did this, not only because she had the generosity of spirit to help a young and slightly anxious officer find their feet (although that spirit she certainly had), but also because she was dedicated to student representation and democracy, and deeply cared about the voices of all students, whomever they were. In Ruth's passing, the world has lost a positive and inspiring person. A person who thought of others before themselves, and whose life tangibly improved the lives of others. In short, a really good person. My sincere sympathies to Ruth's family and those who knew her best.
