I was privileged to know Noel for around 30 years. Other than being an expert driver on diesel and steam traction he was a real gentleman with time for everyone be they passengers, staff or enthusiasts. He regretted the end of the older sets, his first driving turn after passing out was on a 70 class, and thought the newer trains lacked character. I think he was happiest when driving the steam and was hoping to be back in charge of 171 but this will sadly never happen now.
