So sad to learn of Nigels' death. He was a guru, mentor, friend and colleague for over forty years. I was one of his early PhD students (co-supervised by the much-missed Mike Ashmore) at Silwood Park and his enquiring mind was always of great assistance in my research. Given his role as a top UK expert on air pollution, we also lived and breathed the national political debates on acid rain through the 1980s, which led to my career as an environmental campaigner, interspersed with academic roles. I was proud to call him a friend and even lived with him, Caroline and the boys for several months in their Reading house when - after returning from a botanical expedition to the Yukon in 1986 - I had nowhere to live! We always kept in touch, latterly when he brought the pollution option students to study mining issues in Derbyshire and I arranged study tours of contested mineral sites (by then I was working for CPRE in Sheffield). A unique man who was a huge enabler of my and many others' careers, I am sure. My condolences to Elinor and his family. He will be greatly missed!
