I first knew Ralf through his many excellent contributions to sulfur chemistry. Not only was the work elegant it was always reported beautifully. I was lucky enough to have met him many times over the past 30 years including in summer 2017 in Berlin. He was very proud (and knowledgable) about Berlin and strode around with great energy and infectious enthusiasm telling us numerous anecdotes, stories of life and history in this great city. In quieter moments when discussing chemistry his insight and knowledge (especially about sulfur) was wonderful and I often emailed him for science advice which he dispensed with astonishing patience.
I shall miss him as a scientist and as a charming friend with a wonderful sense of humour
