Remembering Steve, our colleague and friend. Remembering Steve, our colleague and friend. Steve joined QA almost four years ago and built a reputation as a great Learning Programme Director, specialising in developing PPM learning programmes and supporting clients to realise their capability improvement strategies. Feedback from his learners was tremendously positive, his energy and experience was present in all his interactions with our clients. Steve’s ability to engage with a client and take time to truly understand their objectives resulted in many successful long term client relationships. He will be sorely missed by all his colleagues, especially those he worked closely with in The Learning Consultancy and PPM community. Steve was diagnosed with a terminal condition just two weeks ago and doctors thought that he had a little more time. His death has therefore come as a real shock to his family. We are in touch with his wife Jackie – offering our support to her and her three children at this terrible time. I am an early riser and in the last few month Steve and I were often the only 2 people in Cannon St @ 7am. He always had a huge smile and time for a chat. He was full of enthusiasm for his customers and the problems that we were trying to solve for them. I will miss his early morning optimism and warmth. Lisa

Steve and I used to often chat in International House about one of our favourite subjects, training. Not IT training but fitness training. As a national (I remember Steve said he was competing in international competitions too) level competitor, we discussed how to improve my swim stroke and how he prepares for a multi discipline sport. We discussed event times and that he could still just beat his children in triathlon and I said that that one day like his children, my son would be able to beat me at my sport of martial arts too. We both knew there was no way we are going to be beaten by our kids at our sport but we would also be so proud of them the day we eventually would lose to them. This sums up what a proud but humble family man Steve was and I will miss our chats. My condolences to Steve’s family.

Steve was the last member of the team I met - a rather fortuitous alignment of planets found us both in Paris without prior knowledge of each others trip. He instantaneously treated me as an equal although I was a relatively unknown quantity having just joined the team. His warmth openness and friendship was something I appreciated and something I will always try and replicate towards others. His calmness under pressure and meticulous planning are themes throughout these messages. An example being we were all having repeated difficulty in accessing a clients site abroad and the team circulated many emails over a period of months, each one increasing in frustration. Except for Steve's response which was 'don't get angry....write a poem instead'. The following was penned at an airport whilst waiting for a flight home: I think its the last line that will stick with me in terms of remembrance and life lessons I made a plan 3 weeks ago, For a course I delivered today. ‘Beware’, said my mate, ‘And don’t turn up late’, ‘It could lead to a major delay’. ‘The site in Barcelona’, ‘Has renewed its security passes’, ‘We’ve tried to conform’, (As should be the norm), ‘But we’ve forms coming out of our asses’. So I planned for the access, Uploaded the data, Planned all my transport, Arriving no later, Allowing the time to check all the kit, ‘Cos knowing my luck, The projector is... not working. I arrive at the venue, That I had been told. (I trusted the schedule, That may have been bold!) The security guard was very impressed: ‘You’ve uploaded the clearance!’ ‘You must have been blessed!’ But then she announced, (With a grin on her face), That I had been sent to, The wrong ******** place!! With time duly wasted, My taxi departs, At about the same time as, The training should start. The taxi then left me, Without any fuss, About the same place as, I’d just caught the bus. I arrived to a cheer, To most of the group, Who announced the new timings. ‘Had I been in the loop?’. So, could I deliver, The whole of the course, In 3 hours less?’ ‘Yep – I’ll just use the force’, I used Jedi training, (The mind-tricks and such) To a much-reduced timeframe, Without missing much. So, here’s a cheer for the planner, The man who prepares what he can, Accounting for risk, And the odd tricky twist, That could probably mess up his plan. But just beware of the gremlins’, If you still want to go the full distance, Plan to adapt, in case you get trapped, Have good humour and also persistence.

I had started to feel unwell at a client event and I ended up exorcism vomiting in their toilets! TOTALLY mortified I confided in Steve that I couldn't deliver the afternoon session and with absolute calm and quiet he rearranged everything and the client was non the wiser. He then bundled me into a taxi and texted me later in the day to see if I had made it back to Manchester from London safely. Thank you Steve. - Jo

My lasting memory of Steve was an evening spent in Ping Pong restaurant beside St Katherine’s Dock. As ever in Steve’s company the time passed easily and comfortably. After he had acquainted me with art of maximising value from his favourite menu we settled into an engaging conversation about his fervour for Triathlon excellence. I learned so much without knowing I was being tutored. But more than the mechanics of shaving minutes off a swim, ride, and run I saw Steve’s real passion, his family. Typical of Steve he spoke little of himself and all about Chris, Nicole, and Danny. How mum pulled it all together and not of his achievements. A gentleman who will be sorely missed.

I will always remember how Steve and I would turn up for courses and I would be there with a bunch of anecdotes and some bad jokes, where Steve would have coloured folders and put me to shame with his organisation. When you watched him teach, however, you had no idea of all the effort he had put in to make sure it all went smoothly, just like a great teacher should be. He also a wealth of experience, but he never showed off about it - he was always very humble, funny and engaging, and delegates really responded to that.

Attached is a picture of the card Steve had intended to write to his colleagues. Unfortunately, the final week came as quite a shock in terms of how rapid the decline was. He was unable to put words to the card in the end. Whilst he'd probably hate that I'm passing on a piece of what he would consider unfinished work, it was important to him that people in QA understood his intention to thank them for their kind words - that people were asking after him and wishing him well meant so much to him.
