Dear Al,
Unfortunately, as can regrettably happen sometimes we never take the opportunity to express our gratitude to people who have significant impact on our careers and moulding us as human beings. I first met you as a very inexperienced "know it all" constable back in 1998. You taught me humility and emotional intelligence, traits that have served me well.
Who would have thought ten years later we would meet in winter classes. You asked me whether I was considering umpiring. I replied I wasn't at the time, I was interested in coaching. You strongly suggested I do as you believed I had the traits you taught me, to be a good umpire. As in 1998, I took your advice and now find myself glad I did.
The work you have contributed to the VCAUSA cannot be understated. You worked tirelessly to deliver greater service delivery to umpires. Your only motivation was to improve Victorian umpires. Your contribution will be sadly missed.
I sincerely apologise for not taking the time to express my gratitude, you so justly deserved. I regret missing that opportunity. At times, we take life for granted and for that I am sorry. Al, thanks for the time you gave to help me improve as a person. The policing and umpiring are by products of this. Without your guidance, I wouldn't be where I am today.
To Sue, the cricket family is here for you and I pass on my deepest condolences to a great man.
Kind Regards,
Phil Gillespie
