I am deeply saddened that I am unable to be with you today to share in the celebration of Bob’s life. I am away in Kruger, which I know Bob would have asked all the questions about where I am staying, as I know he loved to visit Kruger.
I met Bob 36 years ago when our company merged with Spencer Steward. We were a small company of 25 staff and we joined this huge company of just on 100 staff, it was quite daunting. Not long after the merger, at a breakfast for the whole company, the company name was changed to BDO Spencer Steward and we were told that Mr Bob Hood had managed to get our business in South Africa to join the BDO International Network of companies throughout the world. Bob through your foresight, BDO Johannesburg, through having the BDO name, has now grown to 950 staff and over 2000 staff in South Africa – your legacy lives on through BDO.
Bob went through a stage at the office, of getting phrases mixed up, and we fondly named them ‘HOOD-A-RYTHEMS”. We even considered naming our new board rooms after by Bob’s “Hood-a-rythems”
But my link to Bob took a different turn. We used to chat about golf and Bob used to say to me, you must known my Niece Patsy, she also plays at Randpark. Due to Patsy playing during the week and I playing on a Saturday it took sometime but we finally met. Then one day Bob phoned me and told me Patsy’s company had had a robbery and had lost all their computers and backups. He asked if please could I go to Patsy’s house and please help her. I recall sitting afterwards, can’t remember if it was over a cup of tea or glass of wine having a chat, and Patsy later pointing out that her son also lived at Cedar Lakes, just across the dams on the other side. Never was I to guess that I would be spending many hours in “that house just over the other side”.
Over the past years, Bob regularly phoned me for assistance on his tax, dealing with efiling was not his friend. I was always honored when he phoned, knowing that he trusted me enough to call me. He was a true Gentleman and always phoned me back to thank me, no matter how small a task I had done. We chatted about a number of things but he way always sure to ask me how my golf was and in the past few years told me that he wished he could be back on the course.
I always used to joke with the people that still knew Bob at the office and say “Bob used to be my Big boss and now he comes for Christmas Lunch”
Bob, I will sorely miss your sense of humor, your caring and your true friendship. Rest in peace .
God Bless
