To me Nigel Bell was so very much. An inspiration in his sheer verve, knowledge and enthusiasm for a subject which I also loved. Perhaps most of all for giving me my big chance, a place on the Master's course in 1979. My father had just died and I hadn't done so well in my degree but Nigel gave me a place and a full grant on the wonderful Master's course which literally changed my life. I have spent my time as a lecturer at Sorbonne trying to recreate, even in a small way, the extraordinary ambiance of the ET Master's at Imperial. Nigel came to speak to students several times and every time I saw him it was just a joy to be with him. I am so sorry to hear he has died and my fondest condolences go to Elinor whom I also know well. With much love and thank you so much Nigel, Veronique XXXXXXX
