Nigel's passion, enthusiasm and expertise for his subject were amply demonstrated in all his lectures, and his huge capacity for supporting and encouraging all his students together with his admirable administrative skills played an enormous part in the initial and continuing success of the MSc course and the Centre itself. I was a student on the 1981 MSc course and subsequently stayed on to do research, then taking on the role of Academic Secretary. I feel privileged to have been able to work with Nigel - he was amazingly efficient - if he said he would do something you could rest assured it would be done, and I think I can safely say he was the best boss I ever had. He was always a pleasure to work with. Like many ex students I have kept in touch with him, and will miss him enormously. My sympathy and condolences go to Elinor and the rest of his family.
