I remember Nigel with great fondness from all my years as an MSc and then a PhD student at the Centre in the late 70s and early 80s. Nigel was a cheerful presence in every part of the Centre, its research, its teaching and its day-to-day life. When I returned after many years to visit, it was Nigel who met me and showed me around the new premises. Nigel was part of the early academic team who understood and fully embraced the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to the world and he, no doubt, helped shape more than a few multidisciplinary thinkers over the years. I am grateful to have known him and send my condolences to his family.
