Franz and I met around 2007 when we took on a complicated EC project, assessing progress on global drug problems that was part of an UNGASS-like assessment scheduled for 2009. Franz was a wonderful collaborator for a researcher lacking in diplomatic, bureaucratic and budgetary skills. I was impressed by how cheerful he remained in the face of European Commission obduracy and rigidity. It was more than just experience that might have generated a thick skin; it reflected a very positive attitude toward life and research.
We became good friends following that project. His enthusiasm for travel was a wonder to behold; he had real curiosity about the world and got to see more of it than anyone I know. A vacation in Guyana is not everyone's idea of relaxation.
I will miss his ebullience and open-mindedness.
