I remember well first meeting Dimitri when I was a graduate student at the University of Florida, where he spent some time working with Prof. Heinrich Eichhorn, a name some will recognize as one of the giants of modern astrometry. Looking at Dimitri's picture here it seems he has hardly changed since then, and the same for his personality: His readiness to laugh and share his good humor, as well as his ready enthusiasm to explain his research. Already at that early point in his career he was setting new standards in the field of binary star solutions, showing people "how it should be done" with a mathematically rigorous treatment of the observations. (No wonder he was working with Eichhorn!) Years later, when I started working on Gaia, I was not surprised and most pleased to find Dimitri amoung the top experts leading the efforts to make this revolutionary mission a reality. He always expected the best from himself and his colleagues, not hesitating to point out faulty reasoning, but always with the best of team spirit and best of motivations, ready to find solutions.
Farewell Dimitri. May the memory of your good example make us better colleagues.
