Brigitte, Dagmar, and all the family, I cannot imagine how losing Janos in this shocking way must have impacted you all. I am deeply, deeply sorry and deeply, deeply sad. Janos and I met as research students in 1978, I think, during a visit he made to Imperial College. We became science soulmates and friends right away, and, despite some dramatic ups and downs along the way, continued to work together from time to time. Over the last 10 years, in particular, as we grew older and wiser, our interactions and friendship regained the excitement and humour shared in our days as PhD students. I had enormous respect for his creativity and intellect and I learned a great deal from him. We had much enjoyable contact in recent years, sharing our mutual passion for research on rock salt, but also discussing life, the universe, our own strengths and weaknesses and much more. I will really, really miss him. I spoke to Janos online, just a couple of weeks ago about a “double act” on salt research, that we were invited to do at a conference in France soon. I shall give a little tribute to him there. He will be remembered far and wide.
