Thank you John Gardiner for your excellent support to Scouting especially at Wearne Bay Sea Scouts over many years as Treasurer and supporter of scouts in Illawong and surrounding areas. John was a very welcoming and communicative family man and helped the large scout group with activities. So it was always a joy to catch up with him with his cheery smile and g'day. John and I were both presented with the Queens Scout Award by Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, a few years apart. He was presented with his in 1976 when he was a Senior Scout at Wooloware Scouts. His parents were both leaders in Scouts and Guides respectively. By a happy coincidence both our children were also awarded the Queens Scout Award at Wearne Bay scouts and are on the Honour Board at Wearne Bay. Gone too soon, as we say in scouting, John has Gone Home.
To You John - a heartfelt THANK YOU for your helpfulness, for Your incredible sense of reality, for being always the voice of reason, for finding practical solutions where others were losing their grip, for Your personal approach to all matters, for BEING THERE always when someone need help, for Your unassuming presence which enriched all around with goodwill and kindness. Your unwavering determination to do better, to be better, to work better, to perform better to be the best You could be — spurred others in their own pursuits and encouraged greater group efforts. You let the wrongs go by without holding a grudge, and so you were free to spread good humour and kindness, thus contributing to general welfare of all around. The jokes, “internet funnies” and interesting videos you used to send were always in good taste and fun or amazement. You never forgot birthdays, and there was always an elegant card from you for all festive occasions, I cherish them always as a source of continued friendship like a fragrance of a flower. Asked for a favour you sprang into action immediately and never expected rewards for it. At work, in Your devotion to Scouting and in private life You always gave all You had. Above all else, You loved Your children with all Your heart, involuntary tears would roll down Your face when you were talking about them, with Your voice tender and soft. They were Your life. Your true love will continue to enrich their lives forever. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LIFE, THANK YOU FOR BEING A GOOD FRIEND. Bo Robertson
John was always so kind, thoughtful and caring. I remember the last time I saw John and it was pouring rain and as he was holding an umbrella and as I was walking to my car without one, he so kindly walked me to my car so I wouldn't get drenched. He was always so helpful, smiling and considerate. I will always remember John for the kindness he gave when we last spoke. We will really miss your friendly face coming in to say hi each week in the Service Desk. Rest in peace and sending my love to the family. x
Dad will truly be missed by all, he was kind-hearted, giving and determined. He would off done anything to look after his children and was very proud of us all, I honestly could not have asked for a better dad. Not only was he a fantastic father he was an incredible human being and had a positive impact on everyone he met through all aspect of life. He always had the best advice and seemed to know all the best answer, I will truly miss his guidance. Stories of him could go on forever, the world was a better place for having him in it. Gone far too soon Love his son Mathew
Prior to moving to Building 26 John was located in an office on the ground floor of Building 25. That is how John became a member of our morning tea gathering every Friday. John always looked forward to these get-togethers and he was a great source of entertainment with his wonderful stories and he also liked a bit of ‘goss’. There was always happy banter and lots of laughs when John was in the room. John, you will be greatly missed by all at our Friday morning tea gatherings !
John was a great asset to ANSTO. He turned around our property situation and he was a great commercial negotiator. I had the pleasure of travelling interstate with John to organise our delegations from the Minister for Finance to do with land. On the day he passed after months of negotiation they all came through. Great work John. He was fun to travel with and share a meal or a coffee with. He was always full of stories and so excited about his plans for the future, which were linked to ANSTO and his many friends and family. I will miss your wit, your sense of humour and the dedication you had to ANSTO. Most of all I will miss my mate. Rest in Peace John.

Thank you to ANSTO for setting up this remembrance site. It is a lovely tribute to John and his family have really appreciated reading the insights and stories from others. Our mother said to me the other day 'Weren't we lucky to have him for as long as we did?" and that is true - and is a grateful reminder to focus on how he made our lives richer, rather than how our lives are poorer for his loss. John makes me want to be a better person. Thank you also to those who donated to 1st Wearne Bay Sea Scouts, which was dear to John's heart, on the GoFundMe page set up by his sons.
