Mark Piggott, a talented and highly-regarded colleague at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s, has sadly passed away following treatment for COVID-19. Mark was responsible for leading capital projects and programmes for our Trust, and also a member of the senior leadership team for Vital Services, the subsidiary company responsible for all facilities and estates services at the Trust's hospitals. Before joining the team in 2019, Mark’s NHS career saw him responsible for capital project delivery at neighbouring trusts. Outside of work, Mark was a dedicated family man. His wife Julie said: “Mark was a great family man, a loving husband and fantastic dad to our sons Daniel and Alex. We’re devastated to have to say good-bye to him. We would like to pay tribute to the staff at Sandwell General Hospital, who have cared for Mark and supported us as a family with compassion and kindness over the past few weeks. We’d ask that you respect our wish for privacy at this difficult time, as we start to come to terms with our terrible loss.”

    I was aware of Mark by reputation but didn’t really get to know him until I interviewed him in July. At interview he clearly knew his subject and importantly wanted to apply his knowledge for the benefit of the NHS. His decision to move from Heartlands was not taken lightly, he thought it through at length, checked and rechecked, and then made a firm decision. This solid, thoughtful approach to decision making was a key characteristic of the Mark that we have had the absolute pleasure to work with for six months. He had a very clear vision of how he wanted to take his service forward. He knew it was individuals that make the difference and how, by developing the right project at the right time they could provide a better environment for Children, Women and their families. I had absolute confidence in his judgement and ability to do this. Mark contributed hugely to the Vital Services senior leadership team. The Team will all have fond memories of his artistic skills at our “away day”. Mark’s passing is a massive loss to the Birmingham NHS, the Trust, Vital Services I will miss Mark’s support at work.

    I worked with Mark in Estates at BHH since the merger with QE and spent time looking at the ACAD project with him. He was a really nice guy, passionate about the work he did and very knowledgeable. I think he was really enjoying his new role at BWCH in the last few months and he will be very sadly missed by the estates community in Birmingham.
