Simon Edwards

21 april 1971 - 9 januari 2023

It’s with a heavy heart that I have to share some very sad news about our colleague and friend Simon Edwards. Tragically he passed away in the night from a heart attack. He was only 51 years young, and leaves a new wife and loving family. He was such a knowledgeable and experienced Solution Engineer and security transformation architect in the in the truest meaning of the role, and his passion for cyber security and understanding the motivation of the organisations behind the cybercrime was second to none. He helped mentor many employees, was a regular expert called-on to offer opinions on BBC Radio, and an example to us all in the industry, having worked at multiple major security companies over the years including Symantec and Trend Micro. Simon will be missed by all that new him; intelligent, good-natured and funny.

I first met Simon in 2016 when I and my team were acquired by Trend Micro. Simon struck me as a lovely chap and we became friends during our working time together. He was always helpful, VERY passionate about cyber and just a lovely person to work with. He later followed me to work for another company, Nominet which didn't work out too well but we maintained our friendship and enjoyed lunch a few times. Always supportive, always willing, always helpful. When e moved to Symantec to then be acquired by Broadcom it was his sentiment that convinced me I should consider coming across after IU'd been approached to join. Simon's judgement and recommendation counted for a lot. I trusted him. He endured a lot of anguish over recent years and the few lunches we had last year showed this but there was a glimmer of hope and light for him which I pleased to see. We talked camper vans, shared ideas etc. Simon my friend, you will be missed!! Rest in peace!

I first met Simon in 2020 at the Bracknell offices of Broadcom, not long after the acquisition of Symantec. From the start, he showed great passion for Cybersecurity and impressed me greatly. We got on very well, and he was easy to talk to. A few months later, Simon joined me on two of my key accounts, helping steer strategy whilst engaging with the technical folks to help them out too. Simon mentioned on several occasions how much he enjoyed the Aviva account, finding it “the most pleasant” of his clients. He revelled in collaboration with the account team as well as with the clients. Simon, energetic as ever, was always willing to contribute constructive ideas and solutions, demonstrating he had a solid grasp of cybersecurity, which benefitted clients and colleagues alike. Simon was a great asset to the account teams, taking a proactive approach to helping his clients get the best cybersecurity outcomes and steering them down the right path. Simon was fearless! He was comfortably engaged with and respected by everyone he met at all levels of seniority. I will personally miss Simon’s council.

I remember hiring Simon into Symantec over 4 years ago, he stood out in the interviews as being someone who was not only an extremely knowledgeable security professional, but a friendly, interesting, funny guy, with lots to say, but very humble with it. He has made such an impact since joining, to the Symantec business and personally to the people and customers he has worked with. I shall miss Simon, so tragic his life was taken so soon. I received so many messages of condolence in the first few days from people in the industry that I created this remembrance page for all to share their messages directly with Simon's family who may not be directly aware of the impact he has had on so many people in the Cyber security industry. RIP Simon
