Franz Trautmann

June 9, 1953 - June 11, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear colleague and friend, Franz Trautmann. Franz Trautmann was an internationally renowned and respected expert in national and international drug policy. He served as the Head of the Unit of International Affairs at the Trimbos Institute for 15 years and he made substantial contributions in international drug policy as a senior researcher and advisor. Throughout his career, Franz Trautmann has developed, coordinated and executed an extensive range of international projects focused on drug demand reduction through prevention, treatment and harm reduction approaches. Franz Trautmann was well known for his policy analyses and evaluations for various governments and international organisations as well as for his research on Rapid Assessment and Response. He has influenced many stakeholders in his training seminars worldwide on important topics in the field of drug policy and HIV prevention. His most recent projects included the Central Asia Drug Action Programme (European Commission), HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support in Prison Settings in Sub-Saharan Africa (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and a study on Global Illicit Drug Markets (European Commission). Franz Trautmann was a charismatic and a dedicated expert, who will be remembered as a jovial, energetic colleague with a unique sense of humour. Franz will be sorely missed by his colleagues and peers in both the Netherlands and throughout his international network.

Dear Colleagues of Franz Trautmann: We are shocked and saddened by the news of Franz’ passing received yesterday after my email to him was returned with your note. My wife Patricia and I call Amsterdam our second home and have traveled to the Netherlands at least twice a year for the past twenty years. We met Franz in Chicago in 2012 when he was one of the keynote speakers at a seminar we sponsored on “Rethinking the War on Drugs” in America. It was easy to befriend Franz as we had common interests and much to talk about. We hit it off right away and made a date to see him in AMS in the Summer of 2012, and were fortunate to be able to spend time with him twice per year ever since. We truly considered him a friend. We learned about the loss of his spouse, his relationship with his son, and his caring for his father. Is it possible for you to send us the email address for his son, and his girlfriend Lidia, Lydia (sp?) We were never able to coordinate a meal with Lidia, but heard much about her. We would like to write to them directly. Can you help us with email addresses? The loss of Franz is a loss for mankind as he made a positive impact on the world and left it a better place-but he left it too soon. Our deepest sympathies

Franz and I met around 2007 when we took on a complicated EC project, assessing progress on global drug problems that was part of an UNGASS-like assessment scheduled for 2009. Franz was a wonderful collaborator for a researcher lacking in diplomatic, bureaucratic and budgetary skills. I was impressed by how cheerful he remained in the face of European Commission obduracy and rigidity. It was more than just experience that might have generated a thick skin; it reflected a very positive attitude toward life and research. We became good friends following that project. His enthusiasm for travel was a wonder to behold; he had real curiosity about the world and got to see more of it than anyone I know. A vacation in Guyana is not everyone's idea of relaxation. I will miss his ebullience and open-mindedness. Peter Reuter
